Stick Time
How did Wayne Gretzky become Wayne Gretzky? Not by just playing a few games every week. Instead, he spent countless hours on a frozen backyard pond with unstructured ice time, fooling around, experimenting, to "see where the puck took him", to the point where he could feel it without looking down.
In Ken Dryden's book The Game, there is a passage where he discusses Guy Lafleur's habit of practicing on his own at the Montreal Forum for one hour before every Canadiens' team practice .... and he was already a perennial All-Star. Somebody in his early life taught him the value of StickTime!
In warmer climates in the USA, we can't offer frozen ponds, but our indoor rinks can do the next best thing: ice sessions devoted strictly to individual skills development .... skating, stickhandling, passing, and shooting .... StickTime! This is the time for experimentation and trying new things. Things you don't have time to learn in a game. This is the time to get so accustomed to having a puck on the end of your stick that it becomes second-nature to you for the few moments you do get it in a game. This is NOT pickup hockey! No (semi-) organized games! StickTime is intended for players to just skate and work on individual skills development, and most importantly to have fun.
Come and practice your skills at KHS' available stick time sessions. We offer daily drop in stick times. To check available drop-in stick times, please check our general schedule on the home page.
Cost: Sticktime - $15 per session or you may purchase a punch card $130 (10 sessions)
The Stick Time Rules
Full equipment required.
All skill levels welcome
Minimum age allowed - 7 years old without adult supervision
Minimum age allowed - 4 years old with adult supervision.
Must wear full cage if under 18 years old.
Maximum number of skaters allowed = 20.
Rink staff coaches are allowed to reserve the ice for private lessons.
No 'weighted' pucks (which can damage the rink boards, the glass, and other players)
We allow stick weights to be used instead:
No pickup games allowed! Why?
o StickTime is for individual skills
development.
o We have pickup games at other times.
Therefore we do not sanction large groups of people monopolizing 1/3 or 1/2 of the ice for pickup games during StickTime. Since our coaches can reserve the ice for private lessons, that would leave very little room on the ice for people who came there to work on their stickhandling.
What This Rink Does For The Players:
Put out at least 2 goals, and more if warranted by the number of coaches conducting private lessons.
Put out 25 pucks, minimum.
What The Players Do For The Rink:
At the end of Stick Time, please put all the pucks in the nets. This helps our rink staff prepare the ice for resurfacing so that the next event can get started on time.
Come out and have fun with your friends during one of our many Pick up sessions. Practice games are an essential part of the development process.Improve your game skills while having lots of fun. Please check the schedule for available times
